Is the show Jericho realistic? If atomic bombs were ignited in cities all over the USA....?

would there be towns that survived and did not suffer the affects of radiation? If you haven't seen the show. Jericho is in Kansas and Colorado and Georgia were bombed as was D.C. and a few other cities.
