Is it really necessary to pay extra to insure an item by post? (UK)?

Is it really necessary to insure an item by post when sending packages through royalmail/parcelforce etc? These couriers charge extra for additional insurance, but as I understood it, if they damage or lose an item in transit, by law theyd be liable for it anyway. Am i correct?
